What is a Passive House?

For many, building a home is a once in a lifetime experience. We believe that that experience should be rewarding and the home should exceed your expectations in terms of comfort, performance, quality, and craft. We build homes using exclusively Passive House principles and methods with a focus on the performance of the home.

A Passive House far exceeds the quality and comfort that a “code built” can deliver. It achieves outstanding performance by building a highly insulated and airtight structure. It requires obsessive attention on the details and methods of construction. There are five key principles that contribute to a highly comfortable home:

  1. Continuous insulation. Just as you wear a down jacket in the winter, a passive house ensures there are no gaps that can create cold or drafty locations.

  2. Airtight envelope. By thoughtfully building the structure, we ensure clean, fresh air stays in the house and cold or hot air stays out. An airtight structure also ensures decades of durability without the worry for mold and condensation.

  3. High performance windows and doors. Windows and doors are the most common location for a home to lose heat. We only work with companies that ensure you have the highest quality windows and doors.

  4. Fresh Air. Utilizing advanced air filtration systems, we ensure your home has a constant supply of filtered, fresh air.

  5. Thermal Bridge-Free. We construct homes to ensure no cold air “leaks” into the structure and bypasses the insulation layer.

By constructing a home with an airtight building envelope you will experience lower utility costs from heating and cooling. Passive House buildings typically reduce heating energy by 90%.
